Sturgeon County Construction Update – October

Sturgeon County Construction Update – October

 What to expect:

We have been hard at work to ensure everyone knows that we are bringing your community fiber optic internet! More importantly, our project is bringing speeds up to 1,000 Mbps! And because Sturgeon County has been so poorly served, this means that you will have an opportunity to get internet that is 1000x faster. Here’s a rundown on the progress so far.

Progress So Far:

We’ve been hard at work alongside the Canadian Fiber Optics team to get fiber into residents’ homes as fast as we can. The transport construction crew has been plowing and directional drilling along the many highways and grid routes, the installation team has been getting ahead of them with drops to the homes ready to connect to our services when the transport and middle mile construction is complete! There were some delays with the fires and weather in the area, however crews are still committed to connect Phase 1 of the Sturgeon Broadband Project in 2023.

Here is the most recent update where the construction stands in our communities from the CFO team:

Drop crews will be out in multiple communities getting homes connected to fiber optics!

Middle mile crews are active in Silverchief, Reyda Vista, and Fairhaven, and in October will be moving in to Pro North and Calahoo Trailer Park.

Transport crews are actively connecting working north from Villeneuve towards Riviere Que Barre to connect communities

As a reminder, the transport fiber is the fiber that will connect hamlets to each other.  The middle mile fiber is the fiber infrastructure that runs along streets and alleys in population centers, and the drop is the fiber the connects your individual home or property. The full status update can be seen below!

If you are in a community where services are coming soon and you’ve already signed up for Northern Lights Fiber, there is nothing required to do on your end! Our team will call you to schedule installations of services once we have network light to your community.

Underground Construction

To prepare Sturgeon County for their digital future, new fiber-optic infrastructure is deeply important. This will ensure that the upgrades will service and last for generations to come.  And to ensure that the network remains reliable, CFO will bury this infrastructure! But even in the best weather conditions, installing new underground infrastructure is hard and dangerous work, so here are some things you should know about the project:

Flagging

Before the project begins down your alleys, side streets, and the drop comes into your yard, you will see flags begin to pop up all around. This is the first step at installation your drop, and if you’ve registered for services (or completed your access agreement) you will be notified when we start this process for your home. These flags are incredibly important as it tells the construction crew where important infrastructure, like gas and electric, is located. If you see these flags, please ensure that you do not touch or remove them from the ground. If a crew is unable to see a flag or the utilities below it could cause serious damage to your utilities or cause harm to the crew! If you would like to let us know about private utilities on your property where we will be building, please call our main line and let our team know. For more information on locates, visit UtilitySafety.ca.

Installing the drop

This is the easy part! Access to the home isn’t required for the initial drop so no appointment is needed. This is completed based on techs availability. The CFO crew will come by and knock/ring first before getting to work. They will install the conduit from our access point to just outside of your home. They do this by making use of a vibratory plow, to install the fiber cable just beneath the ground. All you’ll see is an orange piece sticking out of the ground ready to install your ONT, which converts the light signals into internet. How neat is that? After this, you just need to register internet services to use your new fiber internet network. If you’re interested in learning more about or connecting to Northern Lights Fiber services you can check them out here!

It Can Get Messy

Progress is going very well, but with our variable Canadian weather things can get a little messy. Because we are building buried infrastructure under/in wet ground, progress on our new construction will require a bit of a mess to complete properly. Follow our Facebook page to keep yourself updated as we get updates from CFOC to connect you sooner!

Remediation

This is underground construction, which means there are holes and small trenches for the fiber lines to run down! Although directional drills and vibratory plowing equipment reduce the amount of soil turned, there’s still a small mess. Sometimes, the earth is required to settle for a bit following snow melting, rainy conditions, and the ground shifting naturally. But fear not, remediating anything effected by work and ensuring that it will return to its healthiest form in suitable time will be completed as soon as possible.

The team will wait for the proper weather and ground conditions so the soil can properly settle. At that point, the earth is set to final grade and new grass seed is planted for your lawn to regrow to its previous health! It is a small price required to pay to keep construction moving so homes and businesses can get connected as fast as possible!

If you’re interested in learning more about or connecting to Northern Lights Fiber services you can check them out here!

It Can Get Messy

Progress is going very well, but like all things in our Canadian winters and springs, construction takes longer and can get a bit messy. Spring construction can be difficult as the ground is still wet and is prone to creating creating plenty of mud. Because we are building buried infrastructure under/in wet ground, progress on our new construction will require a bit of a mess to complete properly. Follow our Facebook page to keep yourself updated as we push through this spring to connect you sooner!

Remediation

We are building underground construction, which means we dig holes and small trenches for the fiber lines to run down! Although we deploy directional drills and vibratory plowing equipment that reduces the amount of soil turned, we still create a small mess. But fear not, we always remediate anything effected by our work and ensure that it will return to its healthiest form in suitable time.

Our team will wait for our spring sun to thaw the ground so the soil can properly settle. At that point, we set the earth to final grade and plant new seed for your lawn to regrow to its previous health! It is a small price we need to pay to keep construction moving so we can continue to connect homes and businesses as fast as possible!

Sturgeon County Construction Update – October

Sturgeon County Construction Update – August

What to expect:

We have been hard at work to ensure everyone knows that we are bringing your community fiber optic internet! More importantly, our project is bringing speeds up to 1,000 Mbps! And because Sturgeon County has been so poorly served, this means that you will have an opportunity to get internet that is 1000x faster.

Progress so Far

Although our project was only recently announced, the project has already started the construction phase.

At this time, you will see our transport construction crew plowing and direction drilling along the many highway and grid routes. IMPORTANT: You will also see our middle mile crews building underground infrastructure in the hamlets of:

Villeneuve – Complete

Calahoo – Beginning soon

Hansen’s Estates – In progress

Turfside estates – Complete

If you have already signed an Access Agreement, our drop crew will be placing underground conduit and fiber on your property.

As a reminder, the transport fiber is the fiber that will connect hamlets to each other.  The middle mile fiber is the fiber infrastructure that runs along streets and alleys in population centers, and the drop is the fiber the connects your individual home or property.

Underground Construction

To prepare Sturgeon County for their digital future, new fiber-optic infrastructure is deeply important. This will ensure that the upgrades will service and last for generation’s to come.  And to ensure that the network remains reliable, we will burry this infrastructure! But even in the best weather conditions, installing new underground infrastructure is hard and dangerous work, so here are some things you should know about the project:

Access Agreement

At this time, the most important thing for you to do is sign an access agreement. You can find the link by visiting HERE. Our blog has easy to follow steps.

It Can Get Messy

Construction through our changing seasons and climate is always hard. During periods around spring or rainfall, construction is prone to creating plenty of mud. Because the project is building buried infrastructure under/in wet ground, progress on the new construction will require a bit of a mess to complete properly. Weather may also change the crew’s priorities, so please follow our Facebook page to keep yourself updated as we push through this summer to connect you sooner!

Flagging

Before the project begins constructing in your area you will see flags begin to pop up all around the area.

Sturgeon County Access Agreement

Sturgeon County Access Agreement

Sign your DIGITAL access agreement!

Northern Lights Fiber is so excited to provide you super-fast and reliable internet. But first, our project partners at Canadian Fiber Optics (www.CanadianFiberOptics.ca) need to build brand new infrastructure to your home!

To do this, we need your permission through a document called an Access Agreement! This access agreement is just a document stating that you give permission for new fiber infrastructure to be built to your home.

You can now digitally sign this access agreement by HERE. It’s super easy to do, but don’t forget to confirm it (by the confirmation email it sends you).

But what if I don’t need better internet?

Even if you do not immediately want better internet, consider signing an Access Agreement as it benefits you greatly in the long term! The advantages of replacing the old infrastructure (copper, coaxial, or wireless) are UNLIMITED.

Fiber will bring you faster service

It’s always important to prepare your home for what you may actually need in the future! By signing the access agreement, you can ensure that you are not denied new connectivity and modern services. Modern technology has an increasing demand for high speed internet access – fiber ensures you have access when you need it.

It will save you money

There is no charge to bring this infrastructure to your home! And if you need better (or more affordable) service in the future, there could be a charge associated with building this infrastructure to your home at a later date.

And if you sign up with us, our services feature unlimited data, with no speed throttling. This means when you sign up for one of our packages, we will never charge you extra just for using it, saving you money on data overages.

It will add value to your home

Should you decide to sell in the future. A fiber connection in rural Alberta is extremely rare and sought after by todays younger, more tech savvy buyers. This will ensure that future owners of your home will have an attractive access to the latest technology for decades to come. Don’t believe us? Ask your realtor!

If you have any questions, or would like to discuss this agreement with one of our customer representatives, please contact us at 1-888-236-2947.

Q1. Are Your Packages Unlimited Internet?

Yes – all our packages come with UNLIMTED Data. That means there’s no overages, and no surprises on your bill!

Q2. Do I Have To Sign Up Now?

No. But there are some benefits to everyone if you do!

We’re working hard to get every home in Sturgeon County connected as fast as possible. And believe it or not, the more people that sign up – the easier our job is. It allows us to make efficient use of our labor and resources, which allows us to offer our FREE installation promotion and hook up your services faster!

Most importantly, you are NOT charged until the service actually get installed and activated!

Q3. What If I Sign Up After?

If you sign up after our crews are in your neighborhood, there may be a longer delay in getting your internet installed as we prioritize our workforce in the areas that they are working in. If you need an internet upgrade then now is truly the best time to sign up!

Singing up now ensures you get the free installation promotion. This saves you from having to pay the installation price, which is $150 dollars!

Q4. When Will My Home Get Connected?

Because this is such a large and major project, that’s a hard question to answer. But what we can say is that we are starting construction this month in Villeneuve. It is expected that the first activations will happen sometime late summer, with the entire project wrapped up late fall or early winter.

Q5. Are you guys hiring?

Yes! This is a BIG infrastructure project, and there’s plenty of jobs to be had! Importantly, we want to create as many jobs for locals as possible.

We are hiring for the following positions:

  1. Hydrovac Operator (Canadian Fiber Optics)
  2. Directional Drill Operator (Canadian Fiber Optics)
  3. Backhoe Operator (Canadian Fiber Optics)
  4. Plow Operator (Canadian Fiber Optics)
  5. Customer Service (Part Time, Casual, or Full Time – Northern Lights Fiber);
  6. Event Coordinator (Part Time, Casual, or Full Time – Northern Lights Fiber).

Click HERE to see our CARREERS page.

Q5. How Far Does Your WiFi Go?

We love our WiFi routers. They use use the “latest and greatest” WiFi6 technology. And for many homes, there will be no problem ensuring that your internet connection is suitable across your whole home.

In the case that you live in a larger home, or perhaps just want strong signals everywhere, we offer some really awesome bundles to ensure that you have WiFi in all the places that matter to you!

Q6. How Many Devices Can I Connect to the New Network?

We heard from many people that their WiFi Routers can only connect up to 10 devices at a time. The good news is that our routers can connect 250 devices!

You might think like that’s a lot, but we think you’ll appreciate it (especially with unlimited internet usage).

Canadian Fiber Optics Partnering with Sturgeon County

Canadian Fiber Optics Partnering with Sturgeon County

Investing in Rural Alberta

From Sturgeon County’s press release:

Residents and businesses in Sturgeon County are officially one step closer to having reliable, accessible, and affordable high-speed internet right to their door. After an extensive selection process, Sturgeon County has partnered with Canadian Fiber Optics for the development and operation of a fiber-based internet service, starting with a pilot project in the south-west corner of the county that includes the Hamlets of Villeneuve, Calahoo, and Riviere Que Barre, the Villeneuve Airport, and the Heritage and ProNorth Industrial Parks.

“High-speed internet is a need-to-have versus a nice-to-have for our residents and businesses, which is why we approved the broadband strategy and are investing up to $7.3 million for the pilot project area. Sturgeon County is very excited to be working with Canadian Fiber Optics to help fulfill Council’s vision for a connected community. Their experience with rural connectivity solutions and appreciation of the challenges faced by rural communities made them a clear front-runner for the Sturgeon County broadband project.”
– Mayor Alanna Hnatiw, Sturgeon County

Resetting The Benchmark

While rural municipalities have been tackling the issue of rural broadband for a number of years, Sturgeon County’s solution is quite unique. After extensive consultation with the industry, the County developed a shared risk/reward model where both the County and Canadian Fiber Optics contribute financially to the development and operation of the service and share the revenue. The County also implemented an FTTP (Fiber-To-The-Premises) approach that offers residents and businesses the fastest and most reliable technology available, providing speeds starting at 100Mbps (twice the Canadian standard) and capable of 10Gbps, faster or equal to any service in Canada.

A Rejuvenating Investment in Rural Communities

This bold investment will strike directly at the digital divide and empower the residents of Sturgeon County and its local industry. Canadian Fiber Optics believes in the right to connect, grow, communicate and streamline both lifestyle and business. This partnership will foster crucial opportunity in Sturgeon County and ensures future proof fiber connectivity that will benefit both residents and businesses for generations to come.
